How To Travel The World On A Budget
If you want to travel the world but are not super rich, it is still possible. However, you will have to make some sacrifices. Here is how to make it happen:
Avoid flying
Traveling overland is always less expensive than flying, so attempt to do this whenever possible. Obviously at some point, if you are touring the world, you are going to have to go overseas. However, when at all possible, going by train or bus is the way to go if you want to travel the world on a budget.
Avoid taxis
When in town, walk, run or ride a bike as much as you can. This will give you exercise, and save money on taxis at the same time. Taxis can be extremely pricey, and you should steer clear of them. Likewise, stay away from rental cars, as they will cause you to burn through your money extremely fast.
Do not eat out
Eating at home for every meal is the way to go when you travel the world. Buying food at the local markets will save you lots of money, and can make the difference between making it around the world all the way, or having to turn back halfway through due to a lack of funds. If you do have to eat out for some reason, then avoid the tourist areas. This is where the most expensive restaurants will be.
Instead, go somewhere out of the way, as this will be cheaper and in many instances the food will taste better. Just be cautious about what you eat at these locations. Whereas at the tourist areas they might tone down the food, at the local restaurants they will not.
Avoid 5 star hotels
Okay, so this tip is not exactly rocket science. But the fact remains that saving money on lodging is one of the most important factors in the success or failure of your travel the world trip. Try to find cheap apartments if you plan on staying anywhere for 14-21 days or more. For short term stays, look into areas that offer camping.
Conclusion
If you use these common sense tips, you will save a lot of money for your travel the world trip. It might take some discipline, but if you are willing to make the sacrifices you can enjoy a great trip for a fraction of the usual cost.
